Laws of Power – 34

Be royal in your own fashion: Act like a king to be treated like one: The way you carry yourself will often determine how you are treated: In the long run, appearing vulgar or common will make people disrespect you. For a king respects himself and inspires the same sentiment in others. By acting regally and confident of your powers, you make yourself seem destine to wear a crown.

In my mind, this is all about what we as individuals aspire to. Do I want to be lost in the crowd, or do I want to rise above the fray? People crave a leader, someone who is charismatic and commanding, and someone who is polished and respected. Occasionally, when I send my child off to school or if they set out on life’s journey, I will say to them, “Represent your family well.” It is another aspect of this that must be considered. We are either elevated or tarnished by the company we keep. I have banished good friends because their personal behavior brought shame through association to me and I cannot tolerate that negative influence. In the end, we have only our self-respect and reputation to contend with.
