The Law of Explosive Growth: To add growth, lead followers – To multiply, lead leaders. Becoming a leader who develops leaders requires an entirely different focus and attitude from simply attracting and leading followers. It takes a different mind-set. Leadership development compounds. The more you invest in people and the longer you do it, the greater the growth and the higher the return.
I’m reminded of contingency planning and disaster preparedness right now. I also cannot help but to reflect a bit on the educational development of my three children. The interesting paradigm that exists here is that contingency planning in the work place is much easier because your subordinates generally would be happy, ready or not, to take the reins by any means necessary, whereas children, do not always embrace what you have to offer especially during that 20 year period of time when they are between the ages of 10-30. One constant in this life that I believe is universal is that the more we learn, the more we understand how little we have learned. If you are fortunate enough to possess true wisdom this will be quite apparent.
